| Frequently Asked Questions What is this WIFI stuff anyway? Our wireless internet service is very similar to how you commonly connect to the internet via DSL, Cable, or Dial-up. We start by placing an antenna somewhere of high altitude for example, a tall building or water tower. A DSL or Cable line is then hooked up to the antenna, amplified and broadcast through it. From 5-50 miles neighboring businesses and residents have access to high-speed wireless internet. (This is commonly called a 'hotspot'.) For a business or residential computer to receive this signal, each computer simply needs a wireless receiving device (called a wireless card) plugged in to it. Most laptops come readily available with wireless cards built in. Please check with your laptop manufacturer if you are unsure about your particular model number. How will I know I will be happy with my service?We recommend purchasing One Day of service to test out the signal strength in your area. This will give you an idea of ease of use or any speed questions you may have. Speeds will vary bases on your proximity to our hot spots. What kind of bandwidth can I expect?The average bandwidth is about 2.5MB. As mentioned above, proximity plays an important part in bandwidth speeds. Is Wifi Toolbox Safe?Yes, using a Wifi Toolbox secured server is equally as safe as surfing the internet from a dial-up, cable, or DSL line. But my Computer Says Unsecured Wireless Connection, what does this mean? Unsecured Wireless Connection refers to a public (shared), not a private (home user), wireless connection. When using an https:// connection through your Web browser, your personal information is protected, even on otherwise insecure connections. This is generally considered strong enough network security to have when sending your credit card number, for example. At a public hotspot, the greatest risk is usually someone situated behind you able to see the numbers you type. Try surfing away from the confirmation page without logging in a second time. If your browser will not allow you to do so, you may need to restart your computer. You might also consider viewing our Troubleshooting Page. Can I add more time before my account expires?No, this option is not currently available. Adding time to your account is easy as you have the option of storing your credit card for purchasing additional time. What can I do to increase signal strength in my area?If you can see the Wifi Toolbox signal with your wireless device, but do not have enough signal strength to adequately surf, you may want to first try simply moving toward a wall of less density in your vicinity. A good example would be toward a window as wireless communication works based on line-of-sight. Secondly, you may need to simply purchase an additional antenna to boost your own signal strength on your wireless device. This can be any antenna that is both compatible to your hardware and can communicate on wireless band 802.11b. These communication amplifiers are readily available at your local electronics or computer supply store and can range in value ($50 and up). What's a Fresnel Zone and how does it effect me?The Fresnel Zone is the area around the visual line-of-sight that radio waves spread out into after they leave the antenna.
